Can you overfill oil in a lawn mower? ›

If there's too much oil in your lawn mower, it can spill over into other areas. For example, excess oil can get into the carburetor while you're mowing at an angle or over uneven terrain. Alternatively, the oil can flow towards the muffler or even the exhaust.

Riding mowers:

Oil capacity is typically 48oz or 64 oz*. Change engine oil every 100 hours or annually, which ever comes first.

Small Engine Oil Type Recommendations:

Use SAE 30 in warmer temperatures of 40° F and higher (5° C and higher) Use SAE 10W-30 for a varying temperature range of 0 to 100° F (-18 to 38° C), this grade of oil improves cold weather starting, but may increase oil consumption at 80° F(27° C) or higher.

Pull it out, wipe it off with a towel or paper towel, re-insert it, and pull it out again. The oil on the end of the dipstick should be semi-clear, and it should end between the two dots on the dipstick. If it is dark in color, below the bottom dot, or above the top dot, it is time to change the oil.

1-2 millimeters above is okay, but anything more than that needs to be corrected (especially if you smell burning oil, see smoke, or notice that the engine functioning abnormally).

If the motor oil level is low, add a small amount of oil to the crankcase before mowing, then change the oil after you finish.

Best Lawn Mower Oil Types

SAE 10W-30: Varying temperature range, this grade of oil improves cold-weather starting but may increase oil consumption. Synthetic SAE 5W-30: Best protection at all temperatures, improved starting with less oil consumption.

SAE, the acronym for the Society of Automotive Engineers, is responsible for establishing a classification system based solely on oil viscosity. To classify the oils, their viscosity is measured in cold conditions at different temperatures below zero, and then in hot conditions at 100ºC.

10W30 is a common motor oil grade suitable for many lawn mowers. Your owner's manual will tell you the exact grade required, but in almost all cases 10W30 is the right stuff for a four-stroke engines. Any brand of oil that's suitable for cars or trucks will work fine in your mower.

Most 18–22″ walk behind engines take around 20 ounces (oz.). Most lawn and garden tractor riding mowers take 1–2 quarts, which includes the oil filter, if it has one. If you don't have an engine owner's manual, put in one quart, then check the oil level. If it appears low, add and recheck every 1/4 quart.

There will be two marks on the dipstick to show the optimum level that your oil should be at. Your oil level should be somewhere between the two. If your oil level is below the bottom line, or if there isn't any oil on the dipstick at all, you should immediately top up your engine oil.

A general guideline is to change lawn mower oil every 50 hours of use or at least once a year. However, you may need to change the oil more frequently if you use your lawn mower frequently or in harsh conditions.

Too much oil in the engine can also cause the pressure on the crankshaft to increase, causing oil to enter the exhaust pipe from the crankshaft into the combustion chamber, blocking the combustion chamber hole with oil and eventually clogging the engine. Wet spark plug; excess oil will also flood the spark plug well.
